The Florrie

Environmental, Wayfinding

Creating a sense of place and belonging

The Florence Institute (The Florrie) in Liverpool is the oldest known surviving Boys Club in the UK, formed in 1889 it helped build roots for the local community. Fast forward to the twentieth century, and after 22 years of closer, The Florrie is open and inclusive to all being the cornerstone for the community it once was.

With the redevelopment of the grade II listed building's basement space into a new youth zone, this project formed part of establishing a sense of ownership and expression of The Florrie's heritage and future endeavors, creating a space that enables play, learning, and belonging.

The projects delivered across multiple touchpoints from artworks to heritage timeline feature walls and wayfinding systems, all of which were underpinned by one visual palette and narrative language helping to bring a sense of clarity and consistency across the space, tying in all artwork with the interior architecture.

The work's visual language drew inspiration from the Grade II building to influence graphic shapes and devices to form bespoke patterns, iconography, and wayfinding systems. This foundation brings a sense of place and Liverpudlian pride to the space.
